The Spanish electric bicycle market has grown substantially for the second consecutive year. In 2019, the sales of electric bicycles increased by 28.3% to more than 140,000, and the average retail unit price rose by 11%, slightly higher than 2,400 euros, far exceeding the price that Spaniards have been buying ordinary bicycles.
In 2019, electric bicycles accounted for 11.3% of the 1.261 million bicycles in the Spanish bicycle market. In the past few years, the electric bicycle market has expanded rapidly, reaching 54.5% in 2018. The data in 2019 show that electric bicycles are growing steadily. The Spanish Bicycle Industry Association (AMBE) provided the survey data. AMBE is composed of 38 major Spanish bicycle manufacturers, importers and distributors, which together hold 54% of the Spanish bicycle market. There are approximately 2,951 bicycle stores in Spain, and the number has decreased slightly. Last year, a total of 319 bicycle brands were sold, 8 fewer than in 2018.
The total sales value of bicycles (including electric bicycles and bicycles) increased by 9.27% from 1.7 billion euros in 2018 to nearly 1.9 billion euros in 2019. In terms of value, bicycles are the most important sporting goods market in Spain, with a market share of 24.6%. In 2019, the total bicycle sales accounted for 46.09% of the sports goods retail market. In previous years, this proportion was 43.8%. The second largest commodity in the retail market is bicycle equipment, which accounts for 30.47%, including textiles, helmets, etc. This business accounts for 16.76% of the retailer’s revenue.
The sales of electric bicycles in Spain have increased significantly, and the entire market has increased by 20.41% to 1.26 million from 1.05 million in 2018. In addition, mountain bikes increased by 16.3% to 475,000 units; children's bicycles increased by 45.3% to 478,000 units. The average retail price of mountain bikes fell by 5% to 699 euros, mainly because many customers switched from ordinary mountain bikes to more expensive electric mountain bikes.
AMBE expressed concern about the development trend of urban bicycles. After years of growth, the sales of such models in 2019 were only 93,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 24.2%, while the average retail price increased by 15.2%. The increase in sales of electric bicycles pushed up the average retail price.http://www.nwowtech.com
